Stating a quote from an unknown observer “The Coffee houses particularly are very commodious for a free Conversation, and for reading at an easie Rate all manner of printed News,” is surprisingly a very true statement. It is hard to believe that we advance in technology by going back in time and perfect the imperfections, that the old is the latest new.
As the old style of newspaper and TV evolves to those of the on-line Facebook and Twitter, our method of communicating have changed drastically as ordinary people are sharing, distributing and discussing news in an instant like those on Twitter. The idea that the readers are also challenging the media elites with the unofficial assistance of technological firms such as Facebook and Pinterest is really a revolution. With the current situation of the internet, information transparency helps reduces the partisanship that maybe misleading as most of the media fabricated their stories just to improve their appeal to readers and advertisers.
From all of the splendid perks we have on information transparency from the internet, not everything is utopia as we see as everything has two sides like a coin and the price of information transparency also revolves around sensitive information that may want to remain in the shadows and can have fatal consequences if published. This darker side of this coin is known as journalism unaccountability, that can be exploited by blackmail as well as extortion.
Effortless to say, the internet belongs to no one and everyone. In my personal opinion, it is unwise to have internet censorship because it might change the whole perspective by leaving a part of the story out of the picture. Imagine yourself trying to understand something by looking through a straw, it will alter your perspective of the subject and hence the choices and verdicts could be different.
